Top Entertainment Companies Embrace DigiDelivery for Fast, Secure Digital Media Exchange
Breakthrough technology gaining acceptance in audio, broadcast, film, video game, and mobile technology industries(Tewksbury, MA – October 12, 2005) Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVID ) today announced that its Digidesign audio division – which pioneered computer-based audio production with the Pro Tools® digital audio workstation – is rapidly changing the way digital media is being moved around the globe. In less than a year, the Digidesign® DigiDelivery® file-exchange system has emerged as a favored solution for transferring large media files between collaborators in the audio, broadcast, film, video game, and mobile technology industries.Companies using DigiDelivery include Warner Bros. Studio Facilities, Technicolor, Fox Film, Paramount Pictures, the Discovery Channel, the Cartoon Network, Swedish TV, Ascent Media, SDI Media, Sony Computer Entertainment, Maxis Studios, Effanel Music, Universal Music Group, Gateway Mastering & DVD, and Skywalker Sound.Jonathan Phillips, technical supervisor and editor for foreign versioning of the film Madagascar , said, “In supervising the foreign-language dubbing for this film , we sent hundreds of megabytes of data to 27 countries on a daily basis. Sending a 20-minute reel of audio and video from Hollywood to Russia used to take seven days, but with DigiDelivery it arrived in 30 minutes. DigiDelivery not only shortened our production schedule, but it paid for itself in just our first project.”“DigiDelivery is the first system that actually makes it simple and practical to exchange large digital files of any type with anyone in the world,” said Digidesign general manager Dave Lebolt . “This system is also faster and far more secure than other electronic delivery methods or overnight shipping. It's really exciting to see the system being adopted not just by audio and video production teams, but also by graphic artists, photographers, marketing departments, and everyone else who needs to exchange large files. We expect to see DigiDelivery further expand to entirely new market segments for us.”DigiDelivery combines a simple software utility with an Ethernet appliance that the owner installs on an existing network. The sender drags the desired files onto the utility and enters the recipients' e-mail addresses. Recipients simply click a link in their e-mail to download and decrypt the deliveries without having to enter IP addresses or passwords. Proprietary transfer protocols make DigiDelivery faster and more reliable than FTP, and 128-bit encryption guarantees the deliveries are secure, even in the event that the DigiDelivery appliance is stolen.Any user with an account on a DigiDelivery appliance can send a file, and anyone can receive a DigiDelivery: There's no need for the recipient to have DigiDelivery hardware or subscribe to a service. However, if both the sender and recipient do have DigiDelivery appliances, the files transfer automatically, so the delivery is ready when the recipient needs it and workstations are freed up for more creative, billable work.“DigiDelivery is everything FTP promised, only better,” said Robi Kauker, audio director of game developer Maxis Studios. Kauker used DigiDelivery to produce music, dialogue, and sound effects for the hit video game The Sims 2. He found that the system greatly facilitated the exchange of data among contributors in different geographic regions. “DigiDelivery made everyone on The Sims 2 team feel like they were working in the same room – even when we were worlds away. It's hard to imagine doing a project of this magnitude without this technology.”DigiDelivery is currently available worldwide through Digidesign dealers and Avid resellers.
